Courting Darkness was a hard write for me–not because I got stalled, but because of Hyto. In some ways, it’s one of the most brutal books I’ve written, but it would have been untrue to the series and the character arcs if I’d pulled punches and made Hyto any less brutal and vicious. He was who he was–a terrible being who loved the pain of others. And I wanted to show the reality of what being attacked is like–it’s not romantic, it’s not passionate–it’s a gut-wrenching abuse of power over another. Every time I wrote a scene with him in it, I’d have to take a shower to wash away the slime and cruelty I felt coming from his character. As someone who has been through rape and abuse and getting beat up…well…I also wanted revenge on my attackers from the past, because they sure didn’t get it. But at least, in my worlds, they can get what they deserve at the end. And I’m glad that I wrote the book true to what it needed to be.
