One of the things I remember most from Dragon Wytch was after I wrote it. The week after it came out, on Doom Wednesday (the terrifying day when you find out if you hit any of the big lists), our kitty Luna was dying and we had an appointment to take her in to let her go. I was sitting on the floor, holding her, when the phone rang. It was my editor. She asked me how I was and I said, crying, that we were going to have to let go of one of our kitties. She knew how much they meant to me.

And then she said, “I wanted to let you know you hit the New York Times with Dragon Wytch.”

I couldn’t say much–the juxtaposition between my grief and the good news was too much to handle.

And then my editor said: “I hope the news makes today better.”

I didn’t say much but all I could think was: “Really? Yes, it’s good news but I’m going to lose my Luna today.” I mumbled something, got off the phone, and then Sam and I took Luna in and said goodbye.

I don’t even remember celebrating the news about the list for a week or so, until I could think straight. I still can’t decide whether my editor at that time was insensitive or not. I don’t think so, but it just felt so odd.
