I thought I’d talk about self-care, especially during winter. We’ve finished the holidays, and are focused on new beginnings this month. We’re into new projects and, for some, trying to cope with winter’s bleak days.

I personally love this time of year.

I keep my lights up from Yule for awhile (though not the other ornaments and trees), and the warmth of their glow keeps me smiling.

But I do know that it’s important to take care of yourself during the winter, in many ways. I’m not prescribing anything, but here are some ideas for you:

Emotionally & Physically:

  • If you struggle with the darkness of winter, you might want to try a sun lamp–the kind that medically help elevate your mood.
  • Make sure you’re eating a healthy diet–since in the colder climes a lot of people are less active, try to watch out for eating too much junk food that can make you feel even more sluggish.
  • Get what exercise you can manage. Even if it’s only a few minutes a day, do something that’s active–for you. No ‘weekend warriors’ here, though–make certain you talk to your doctor about what’s best for your body.
  • Moisturize your skin. Winter can dehydrate both your body and your skin. Use whatever lotion or moisturizer that you like, but watch out for dry skin.
  • Hydrate–drink water. Lots of it.

Mentally:

  • Keep your mind active. Want a vacation but can’t take it? Lose yourself in a good book…hint, hint đŸ˜‰
  • Play games–whether they’re board games or video games, do something that activates your mind.
  • Recharge from the holidays. Often, people feel the need to go within and meditate, or plan out the coming year, or just take a break from people. That’s fine. Do what you need to make yourself happy.

What do you do to take care of yourself during winter?

I catch up on reading or shows on TV. We just bought a manual treadmill and stayed using that plus I do wall Pilates and other types of cardio. We’ve started making chia seed pudding for in the morning for breakfast. Trying to eat a higher protein, higher fiber diet.
